Port Arthur Historic Site Tickets

Port Arthur Historic Site tickets: A$55 adult entry with a harbour cruise, valid two days, the add-on tours, opening hours, and whether you can visit without a tour.

Updated November 2026

General admission to the Port Arthur Historic Site is A$55 an adult, A$27.50 a child and A$44 concession (November 2026), valid for two consecutive days, and it includes a 20-minute harbour cruise, free guide talks and more than 30 historic buildings, ruins and gardens. You can visit without a tour: buy the entry from the Historic Site and drive. Without a car, the day tours from Hobart include the same entry; Tassie Tours Tasmania’s Port Arthur, Tasman Sights and Harbour Cruise is from US$109 a person (checked November 2026).

The short answer

With a car, buy the entry from the Historic Site; there is nothing a tour adds that you need, and the ticket lasts two days. Without a car, the entry comes inside every day tour from Hobart carded here, so you do not buy it separately. Either way the harbour cruise is part of the ticket.

What the general admission ticket includes

Map of the Port Arthur Historic Site around Mason Cove: the Visitor Centre, the Penitentiary, the Separate Prison, the Commandant's House, the Memorial Garden, the Port Arthur Jetty, the Isle of the Dead and Point Puer
The Historic Site around Mason Cove: the main buildings, the jetty and the island in the bay.

The Historic Site lists four things in its entry: general admission to the site, a complimentary 20-minute harbour cruise (not compulsory), free guide talks of 10 to 15 minutes through the day, and access to more than 30 historic buildings, ruins, restored houses and heritage gardens. The ticket is valid for two consecutive days. It does not include a guided walking tour: the talks are short stops by the site’s guides, and anything longer is a paid tour (below). It does include the Point Puer exhibition in the Gallery, and a self-guided audio tour is available in English, French, Japanese and Mandarin.

Child prices apply from 3 to 16, and the site lets children 3 and under in free (its page puts age 3 in both bands); anyone 17 or under must be with an adult. Family tickets cover one or two adults with three children; the general admission page prints no family price. Concession needs an Australian concession card, such as a Health Care Card or Pensioner Concession Card.

Add-on tours at the site

The Historic Site sells its guided tours as tickets that include general admission, so you buy one instead of the plain entry, not as well as it. Adult prices, November 2026:

From the Historic Site’s tours pages, read in November 2026; all four depart daily.

There is also a 4-hour Wheel of Fate VIP experience with food from the site’s chef, A$395 a person, booked at least 7 days ahead, and Pennicott Wilderness Journeys’ 90-minute Cape Raoul cruise from the site’s jetty, which the site lists as bookable through Pennicott. The evening Ghost Tour is separate: the Port Arthur ghost tour.

Opening hours, and the practical things

The site is open daily from 9 am to 5 pm and closes only on Christmas Day. The Historic Site advises booking ahead: tours have set times and limited places, and a printed or downloaded ticket gets you past the ticket counter. Cancel at least 48 hours ahead and it refunds the booking less 25 percent.

Parking is free, with spaces for caravans and buses, though the car park fills at peak times. The site is mostly outdoors, on more than 40 hectares of hills, gravel paths and steps; the Visitor Centre, the Gallery, the cafe, the harbour cruise and the Essentials Tour are wheelchair accessible, wheelchairs can be borrowed free (book ahead), and courtesy buggies run between 10:30 am and 3:30 pm. Food is at the Port Arthur Cafe in the Visitor Centre (9 am to 5 pm), the Asylum Cafe (11:30 am to 3:30 pm) and the 1830 Restaurant and Bar (11:30 am to 2:30 pm), and picnic packs can be pre-booked a day ahead. Certified assistance animals are welcome; the site says non-service dogs are often on site but prints no rule on them, so ask before you bring one.

Can you visit Port Arthur without a tour?

Yes. Nothing at the site requires a tour company: you buy the entry from the Historic Site, and the guide talks and the harbour cruise come with it. What a tour adds is the transport, 95 km each way from Hobart, and the stops on the way. Without a car the choice is between a day tour with commentary and stops, and a plain bus with the entry; both are above.
