How Long Do You Need at Port Arthur?

How long to allow at the Port Arthur Historic Site, what fits in three or four hours, how much site time each day tour from Hobart gives you, and whether it is worth visiting.

Updated November 2026

Plan on three to four hours at the Port Arthur Historic Site for a first visit: enough for the 20-minute harbour cruise, one or two of the free guide talks and the main buildings, without hurrying. The Historic Site itself recommends at least half a day, and says most visitors spend between half a day and a full day. The entry ticket is valid for two consecutive days, so a slower visit is possible if you stay on the peninsula. On a day tour from Hobart the time at the site ranges from about 2 hours 15 minutes to nearly 7 hours; Tassie Tours Tasmania’s Port Arthur, Tasman Sights and Harbour Cruise gives three or four, your choice, from US$109 (checked November 2026).

The short answer

Half a day at the site is the usual first visit, and a day tour from Hobart fits it with the drive: about 90 minutes each way. Four hours lets you take the harbour cruise, join a guide talk, walk the Penitentiary, the Separate Prison and the Commandant’s House, and sit for lunch. Three hours is enough if you would rather add Remarkable Cave on the way out. If you want a paid guided tour on top, such as the Isle of the Dead, or the ghost tour in the evening, give it a full day or stay the night.

What fits in three hours, and what in four

Map of the Port Arthur Historic Site around Mason Cove: the Visitor Centre, the Penitentiary, the Separate Prison, the Commandant's House, the Memorial Garden, the Port Arthur Jetty, the Isle of the Dead and Point Puer
The Historic Site around Mason Cove: the main buildings, the jetty and the island in the bay.

The entry covers more than 30 historic buildings, ruins, restored houses and gardens, the 20-minute harbour cruise and free guide talks of 10 to 15 minutes through the day. In three hours most people take the cruise, join one talk and walk the waterfront: the Penitentiary, the Commandant’s House and the Separate Prison, with a stop for lunch. A fourth hour adds the buildings further up the slope, the Convict Church and the gardens, the Gallery in the Visitor Centre, and the Point Puer exhibition, Little Depraved Felons, which the entry includes. A self-guided audio tour is available in English, French, Japanese and Mandarin. For lunch there is the Port Arthur Cafe in the Visitor Centre (9 am to 5 pm), the Asylum Cafe on the grounds (11:30 am to 3:30 pm) and the 1830 Restaurant and Bar (11:30 am to 2:30 pm); bringing your own food is fine on most day tours. Courtesy buggies run between 10:30 am and 3:30 pm for anyone who finds the slopes hard, and wheelchairs can be borrowed free.

When a day is not enough

The site’s paid guided tours fit a four-hour stay if you book a departure ahead: the 45-minute Essentials Tour (A$65 with entry), the 60-minute Escape from Port Arthur (A$75), the 90-minute Premium Tour (A$85), and the 65-minute Isle of the Dead tour, with its ferry, at 12:30 pm, 1:15 pm or 2:45 pm (A$85), prices for an adult in November 2026 (the Isle of the Dead and Point Puer). Two things do not fit a day tour from Hobart. The ghost tour starts after dark, at 7 pm or later from October to March and from 6 pm from April to September, Wednesday to Sunday, when every day tour has gone back to Hobart (the ghost tour). And the Coal Mines Historic Site at Saltwater River, free to enter and also managed by the Historic Site’s authority, is 31 km by road from the Visitor Centre. With the two-day ticket, a night on the peninsula covers both.

Is Port Arthur worth visiting?

For most visitors to Hobart, yes: it is one of the 11 places in the Australian Convict Sites World Heritage Property, a penal settlement from 1830 to 1877, and the buildings, gardens and cove are well kept and well explained. Two honest caveats. It is a long day for three or four hours on site, with about 90 minutes of road each way. And it is a place of suffering: of the convict system, and of the 1996 shootings in which 35 people were killed. The Memorial Garden, around the shell of the Broad Arrow Cafe, is part of the site; the Historic Site asks visitors not to question its guides about that day, and points to the plaque in the garden, a brochure and its Gallery instead.
